Updated: Jun 22, 2021
By the end of this post you should be able to understand the differences between Foam, pocket spring, coil spring and hybrid mattresses.
These are not all the types of mattresses available, but are the top types of mattresses sold by Amazon and other bed retailers.
Examples of other less popular types of mattresses that wont be covered in this post are water mattresses and air mattresses.
Comfort layer: This is the quilted fabric top and underlying layer of foam.
Support layer: This is made up of either coil springs or high density foam.
Bonnel Coil: This is an individual spring and has a hour glass shape.
So, lets start off with foam mattresses.
Different types of foam mattresses:
PU (Polyurethane) foam: This is the most common cheaper foam mattress that comes in different densities. These mattresses usually consist of 3-6 layers of foam. Has a firmer feel and i would usually recommend this type of mattress for heavier people.
Memory foam: Softest type of foam, great for pressure relief and pain relief. You usually feel like you are sinking into the mattress and some would describe it as loafing on a cloud. Memory foam absorbs heat and tends to get hotter especially in summer months. These mattresses usually have one or more PU foam support layers with layers of memory foam at the top and bottom of the mattress.
Cool Gel Memory foam: This is the same as a memory foam mattress but has blue gel infused into the mattress to help keep the mattress cooler.
Natural Latex foam: This is the strongest type of foam mattress and has a springy feeling, giving you more support than other types of foam mattresses. It is made from the sap of a rubber tree. Therefore naturally have less chemicals than other types of mattresses.
Pocket Spring Mattress
Pocket springs are basically a coil spring sewn into a piece of fabric and these springs are then glued together to form a pocket spring mattress. This creates a zero movement transfer effect, which means that is you move or jump on the the one side of the mattress, whoever is sitting or lying on the side of the mattress wont experience any movement. These mattresses will usually have one or more layers of PU and/or Memory foam.
Hybrid mattresses consists of a layer of coil springs (inner spring or pocket spring) and a layers of foam (PU and/or Memory Foam and/or Latex foam).
These mattresses are more durable and are generally more breathable than foam mattresses.
Inner Spring Mattress
Innerspring mattresses consist of a coil springs strung together with wire and a steel border that helps keep the springs in a proper orientation. Inner spring mattresses comes in different shapes and sizes and the most commonly used shape is the bonnel coil, that has an hour glass shape for durability. These types of mattresses are the most conventional and widely used mattress type.
Hopefully you know have a better understanding of the different types of mattresses available to you.
